From an evolutionary perspective, it's debatable what the purpose of science is, or why humans do it but animals don't.
My theory is that science is an evolutionary adaptation by people hoping to succeed at natural selection. A scientist, for example, might believe that he can impress women by designing a rocket ship, and being able to do so helps him to stand out from the other men who aren't able to design rocket ships.
The irony, though, is that science is usually a poor and inefficient way to attract a mate. There are plenty of people with low IQs who live in the hood and do nothing but make babies with tons of baby mommies or baby daddies, and they don't need to go through all of the trouble of designing rocket ships just to get laid or reproduce:
So maybe people who aren't able to attract a mate should learn from dumb people who are actually good at it instead of sexless nerds who waste their time designing rocket ships.
