9 yards was the maximum length of cloth that could be produced on early mechanized looms. That length was the standard amount rolled up for sale. Usual sales were by the yard, often leaving short, unsaleable pieces which could kill any possibility profitable sale, often consuming as waste any profit that had been possible from sale of the entirety. Hence there were discounts given to purchasers who would "take the whole 9 yards".

Riding Shotgun

When driving a coach in the Wild West, whoever sat next to the driver in the front seat often needed to have a shotgun in order to kill any robbers that might come upon them.
