This is why we need the death penalty....democrat party politicians refuse to keep violent killers in prison.......they keep letting them out.

The question today? Will this violent killer, kill again.....?

In 1990, Gerald Reed was convicted of a double murder after signing a confession that he says he was tortured into signing. He was sentenced to life in prison. But today, Reed is a free man after his life sentence was commuted by Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-Ill.).

Reed was granted a new trial in 2018, but a judge ruled prior to a scheduled retrial that his allegedly coerced confession was never used against him in court, so Reed suffered no infringement on his rights. He was awaiting retrial when Pritzker commuted his sentence.

Reed’s co-defendant in the trial is still in prison serving a life sentence. He never alleged any torture at the hands of the police.
-----

The reason Reed’s confession was never used in his trial is that ballistics and other evidence tied him directly to the murders of Pamela Powers and Willie Williams.
-----

Reed reportedly bragged to witnesses after the crime that he killed the couple. That, as well as the ballistics evidence, would have convicted any defendant in the country.

The alleged tortured confession was never used in his trial and the jury never heard it. They convicted Reed based on the evidence.

Except the evidence is that he didn't kill anyone, and that he spent nearly 30 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit.

But you leave that part out.

On October 3, 1990, Gerald Reed, 27, was arrested and questioned regarding the murder two days earlier of Willie Williams and Pamela Powers. He was questioned by Detectives Michael Kill and Victor Breska at Area 3 Homicide, members of the notorious “Midnight Crew” of torturer Jon Burge. They beat him and kicked him repeatedly, and broke a metal rod that was in his right thigh along with the surgical screws that held it in place, causing him excruciating pain. The rod had been surgically placed years before to repair his thigh-bone, which had been shattered by a gunshot.

It was clear to Reed that the beatings would continue until he agreed to confess, and he did. He repudiated the confession at his trial and has proclaimed his innocence ever since. There was no other material evidence against Reed at his trial. Gerald Reed was convicted of both murders, and sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.

But that did not stop the torture. For 27 years Reed has repeatedly requested medical intervention to fix the horrible and excruciatingly painful damage done by his torturers. He has been unable to walk. Finally, last year, he was taken from Stateville Correctional Center to Dreyer Medical Center in Aurora, where Orthopedic Surgeon Steven I. Rabin performed the first step required to repair the terrible damage to his thigh-bone and ease his suffering. Dr. Rabin made it clear that a second, follow-up surgery, was necessary to improve his condition and end his pain, along with physical therapy.

When they do, the family should go meet with the pos that let them go.

Diphit....he was convicted on the evidence...as was his partner.....

They didn't use the confession at the trial.

What evidence. I actually looked at several articles on this topic, and not a one of them mentions any evidence other than the confession that Burge beat out of him.

Yes....every single article tells the same story, this killer is actually a choir boy, wrongfully convicted..........you go find the trial transcripts and I'll look at those...you show us in those transcripts where the confession was used...

It's not my job to dig up 30 year old trial transcripts. You are making the claim that he was really guilty, the burden is on you to prove he was guilty.

take out the torture confession, the fact the judge in the case had ruled that he was entitled to a new trial.

Where is your proof?

Here, let me help you out. Here's the Tribune's take on it.

So the evidence consists of a "community gun" that several members of his gang had access to, and two witnesses who claim they saw him and his partner do it.

No DNA.
Questionable balistics
A confession that was gained by torture...

This is a shit case.

And here.....showing that the quote you posted lied......

Defendant contends that the trial court's finding of defendant's guilt was based on Reed's statement, which was not admissible against defendant.

Notice how everyone of these lying bastards defend the most heinous of things?

He was convicted, you doofus..........you are the one saying the verdict was wrong...using a link that says the confession was used, when it wasn't......

The case you cite is against Turner, not Reed. Where's the case against Reed?

We wrongly convict people all the time, and the written confession was entered into evidence.

But it did contain THIS TIDBIT..

Assistant State's Attorney Frank DiFranco testified that on October 4, 1990, Reed made a post-arrest written statement that explained that defendant wanted to rob Williams because Williams did not have a gun.

Wow. A written statement? You mean a written statement he signed after they broke his fucking leg?

Defendant rested without calling any witnesses. After closing arguments, the trial judge stated that the most damning evidence against defendant was Reed's statement. However, the judge explained that he could not consider Reed's statement, as that would violate defendant's right to confront witnesses because Reed never took the stand. The court found defendant guilty of Powers' aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder, but not guilty of Williams's first-degree murder.

All the Evidence is against Turner. The only evidence they had against Reed was that he was in the apartment that night, and he confessed after they broke his leg.

Hey...shit bird.....

Wow. A written statement? You mean a written statement he signed after they broke his fucking leg?

They didn't submit the statement to the jury, you moron....so it didn't matter to the trial....
