The fact is it was progressives, like Theodore Roosevelt, that passed the anti-trust laws, ended child labor, enacted a progressive tax code and started the process of ending rampant inequality among other initiatives. But for the progressive movement this country would have looked alot more Latin America than Europe. BTW, OP support for salvery was the southern conservative position.
