I'm discouraged.

What they did.

Forgiveness can be just that. It can also be a release for the person wronged. An act of willingness to let go of the wrong done against them, for the sake of their own mental well-being.
Well, okay, but I think you are talking about two different things. You can cultivate forgiveness in your heart. You can let go of the resentment, bitterness, and anger.

That however, is not the same as the act of forgiving a particular person. If a violator is not sorry, then no act on your part will relieve them of that eventually poor destructive mental state. Your practice of cultivating a forgiving heart prepares you for that particular interaction if and when that violator apologizes to you.

I'm discouraged to see people giving in to their base hatred over political violence. I was raised to forgive, not forget. I was told, "Don't be that which you hate," yet I see it happening everywhere these days. This hyperpolarized political atmosphere is robbing us all of our humanity. Lots of people are seemingly sacrificing their highest morals for the most basest forms of hatred.

Am I naive? Perhaps. Am I old school? Yes! I wasn't raised to repay barbarity with barbarity.
You are posting on a website filled with posts designed to attack the other side, bro.

MAGAs are a CULT and that is all I am going to say about that

Violence can be necessary to protect the innocent from violence. But the non violent solution should always be our personal, group and national policy whenever possible.

But yes, irrational hatred, political ambition that in my opinion borders on evil and can be actual evil, stirring up the people against each other, encouraging them to assault each other, suggesting/promoting/encouraging violence for political gain should never be acceptable. I like to think metaphorically that there are especially unpleasant places in hell for those who do that.

And good people must continue to speak out against that. I personally can find little charity in my heart for those doing it.

At the same time I can accept anyone who changes their personal policies and behavior and chooses what is helpful, loving, compassionate, caring, useful, productive, edifying over hate, violence, hurtfulness, chaos. To accept those who give up evil for good is forgiveness.

We must continue to be a people governed by laws, not personal whims and impulses. And we can do that and not be people consumed by hate and/or violence.

No, it enhances the quality of life of those who are still living.
Most of those law changes have happened because of only one side that was occasionally able to overcome the other side stonewalling any efforts to make changes. Nonetheless, the victims are all equally dead be it Charlie Kirk or Rachel Joy Scott. That you think there is a difference leads me to think you should spend time reflecting on that humanity thing you brought up.

The fact I question the similarity means I listen to my human side.

Must you expect me to mourn every soul who lies dead in the ground?

Despite my wishes, wants, or insistences, I think the time for discovery has passed. The time for talking ended the moment the bullet ended Kirk's life that day.

It appears nobody is interested in that anymore. I guess I will be in the minority from now on.
I have no idea what you mean, in your post???? Please expound on your thoughts!

What barbarity is being repaid with barbarity?

I interpreted your post to mean we should discover nonviolent solutions.

I replied that the time for discovery may have already passed us by, the time for talking may have passed when Kirk died.

I don't see people being this mad in regular life. Some of you old farts sit here all day in your "community." You think the entire world is this vitriolic because you've developed tunnel vision from 8 hrs/day on a place that is mostly vitriol.

I don't expect you to mourn anybody. That is on you. Your mourning, however, shouldn't be the basis of public policy.

As a fairly recently converted Catholic, the last year has been an amazing exercise in learning about forgiveness.

It's still a struggle.

I believe it. It's been a struggle for me as well.
