If all you know of Chomsky is his linguistic work then of course you'll be unaware of his other work, buy some books.

I'm familiar with his other work but have seen no evidence of his expertise in other fields.

Why? the efficacy of a person's claims is not based upon the person's certification but on the validity of their supporting arguments. If I see a mathematical argument with some novel conclusion, I don't evaluate that by asking what the guy's qualifications are.

the power of a claim comes from substantiation and proof. This is what I have been saying. Someone whose claims have been proven is someone whose statements would be useful in evaluating that person's future reliability in the future. If I see anargument with a novel conclusion and I don't check the qualifications of the person making the argument, then I might be impressed by a novel but completely unfounded statement because the person doesn't actually know math.

No, I evaluate it by checking the reasoning and logic and calculational accuracy, why would I care about qualifications?
