If people followed the Ten Commandments, would there be less pain and suffering today

I believe if we love Jesus we will keep his commandments. As Biker said, it is giving us a better life and a better community also. We are happier keeping the commandments then not keeping them. We learn obedience by the things we suffer sometimes. There are many benefits to keeping the Lords commandments.

yet out of millions in the US that attend church and know the commandments do not follow them, nor do they avoid the seven deadly sins.

tell that to the industries that charge the consumers a lot more than it actually cost to survive.

If people followed the Ten Commandments, would there be less pain and suffering today?

If you had a brain there would be less pain and suffering throughout history.

The Ten Commandments are not about alleviating pain and suffering, they are about teaching people that it is impossible to keep the law. You really need to read Romans sometime, you might learn something. I doubt it, but YHWH has proven me wrong more than once.

Actually, I do think that if people followed the 10 Commandments, there WOULD be a lot less suffering in the world.

1. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. That means if you place you faith in something other than God, it is placing your faith in something that isn't as strong as God, because God created it, and He has power over whatever it is.

2. Thou shalt not make any graven images. Why? Simple, because if you make an image of something, you'll eventually start worshipping that, rather than paying attention to God.

3. Thou shalt not take the name of God in vain. Why? If you take His name in vain, you're being disrespectful. Quick question............would YOU help someone who is disrespectful of you?

4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. That's telling you to take one day out of the week and reflect on God, as well as get some rest. Hey..............if you work 7 days a week, 365 days/year, eventually you're going to wear yourself out or die from stress.

5. Honor thy father and mother. Not only does it possibly refer to God and Gaia (earth) as another poster has said, but it also means to pay attention to the lessons your parents are trying to teach you so that you can survive in this world.

6. Thou shalt not MURDER (kill is a mistranslation from the original Hebrew). Why? Because if you murder someone, then one of their loved ones may come looking for you to murder you.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Why? Because if you're sleeping around with someone else's spouse, their spouse may come looking for you to hurt or murder you.

8. Thou shalt not steal. Why? Because if you steal something from someone, they may come looking for you to hurt, steal from, or murder you.

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness. Why? Because if you lie to someone, it may come back on you when you're found out, and the person you lied to may want to hurt or murder you. Besides...............if you lie to your doctor about what is going on with you, the doctor may not be able to come up with the proper treatment, which could result in your death.

10. Thou shalt not covet. Why? Because if you obsess over something that someone else has, it could cause you to possibly steal it or murder them for it.

Personally? I think the ideas set up by the 10 Commandments are pretty good ones, because they show you a path on how to live happily and comfortably with others. And, if everyone around you is doing the same thing, then they are living happily and comfortably with you.

And..................fwiw...................almost all religions have some form of the 10 commandments incorporated into their doctrine, so you could almost say that they are universal truths.

And what do you do if you have only a few don'ts? Everything else..

The main problem I have with the 10 Commandments is the first 4 are all about maintaining that religion.

Yes, most religions have something like the 10 commandments. But many of them don't want to pay homage to Christianity any more than Christianity wants to pay homage to them.

Actually, there is no reference to religion, they are only references to God. And............fwiw................the 10 Commandments weren't designed to keep any one religion going, although it may seem that way because of the way that the Christians have co-opted them from the Jews.

You realize that Moses was Jewish, and the 10 Commandments were given to the Hebrew people long before Christianity even thought about being on the earth, right?

Besides..............the Christians have the commandment "thou shalt not kill" mistranslated, because in the original Hebrew, it actually reads "thou shalt not MURDER", meaning you can serve in the military and kill people who are trying to kill you, because self defense is allowed. However....................killing someone who isn't attacking you or going after an innocent person is NOT allowed. Shoot...............there was even a death penalty for people who were judged as having done something wrong, but they tried to never kill someone who was innocent.

My favorite:

Second Commandment: You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

Make yourself a likeness of anything on earth and God is not only going to get you, but get your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren

Guess that is what happens when you have a jealous God

The Ten Commandments suck....not worthy of an all knowing and all powerful being

I could have done a better job and I am just a message board poster

* One might keep in mind, the authentic Commandments etched in Stone by God are inexplicably "lost" ... so indeed, more meaningful than the ones written in the bible would not be to great a feat.

.

They aren't lost. They are in the Ark and Covenant. It's the Ark that's lost.

The esoteric Jesus says that that is not so but literalists do not believe in that Jesus as they refuse to seek God and have settled for idol worshipping their Godinabook.

The kingdom of God and his tabernacle are within you.

Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

Mark 7:13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

Enter into yourself and follow Jesus.

The Golden Rule of "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you" would cover most of the Ten Commandments except for the ones where God says "Worship me or else"

Some christians want us to believe that christianity has a monopoly on moral behavior.

Indeed. While the U S, a so called Christian nation, has the highest numbers in jail and has the highest number of abortions in the free world.

I wonder if that falls under hypocrisy?

Or is it just wearing blinders?

Morality won't get you to heaven.

Not to those who have their head up the ass of a genocidal son murdering God.

All they have to do is embrace human sacrifice and the notion that it is good to punish the innocent instead of the guilty.

I am not an atheist but Satan and Christians want atheists to embrace barbaric human sacrifice and the notion that we should profit from punishing the innocent instead of the guilty and here you are preaching for Satan. Shame on you.

In reality, if God did demand such a barbaric sacrifice, he would be sinning.

He would know that barbaric human sacrifice is immoral.

You do too. Right?

Those with good morals will know that no noble and gracious God would demand the sacrifice of a so called son just to prove it's benevolence.

When you die, Satan will ask you; How was your ticket to heaven purchased? With innocent blood?

When you say yes, you become his.

.

Thou shalt not commit adultery - Voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than the lawful spouse.

I have no doubt adultery was not a message from God ... and has been a source of pain and suffering throughout history inflicted by religious zealots.

- the point being to bring about a world free from pain and suffering would include a re-write of the Christian Bible, that would also be necessary for that religion to represent a True Path of Remission to the Everlasting - than its present state of ineptness.

Actually, when God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Issac, you DO realize that not only did He send an angel to stop Abraham's arm from killing his son, He also sent a ram who was caught in the bushes for a proper sacrifice?

Sorry................but God didn't require Abraham to sacrifice his son Issac, He only asked for it.

And.................if you look at the original translation from the Hebrew, He also asked "please".

Another thing.....................if you check the original Hebrew texts and translate them directly, the 10 Commandments are actually the 10 Suggestions.

God was only telling us how to live.

That is a strong argument but...

I think that murder is speaking about illegal killings. Killing by the state was allowed.
There were obligations in the first five books of the Bible to kill and go to war.
We don't have a more precise definition so if I go by the context, some killings were allowed. Therefore a definition has to fit the context.
If the state sanctions it, it is killing (ususally) and not murder. It is self defense by the state.
