The 10 commandments are not the only moral codes. People can act in a moral manner without ever having read the 10 commandments.

* One might keep in mind, the authentic Commandments etched in Stone by God are inexplicably "lost" ... so indeed, more meaningful than the ones written in the bible would not be to great a feat.

Actually, I do think that if people followed the 10 Commandments, there WOULD be a lot less suffering in the world.
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. That means if you place you faith in something other than God, it is placing your faith in something that isn't as strong as God, because God created it, and He has power over whatever it is.
2. Thou shalt not make any graven images. Why? Simple, because if you make an image of something, you'll eventually start worshipping that, rather than paying attention to God.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of God in vain. Why? If you take His name in vain, you're being disrespectful. Quick question............would YOU help someone who is disrespectful of you?
4. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. That's telling you to take one day out of the week and reflect on God, as well as get some rest. Hey..............if you work 7 days a week, 365 days/year, eventually you're going to wear yourself out or die from stress.
5. Honor thy father and mother. Not only does it possibly refer to God and Gaia (earth) as another poster has said, but it also means to pay attention to the lessons your parents are trying to teach you so that you can survive in this world.
6. Thou shalt not MURDER (kill is a mistranslation from the original Hebrew). Why? Because if you murder someone, then one of their loved ones may come looking for you to murder you.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Why? Because if you're sleeping around with someone else's spouse, their spouse may come looking for you to hurt or murder you.
8. Thou shalt not steal. Why? Because if you steal something from someone, they may come looking for you to hurt, steal from, or murder you.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness. Why? Because if you lie to someone, it may come back on you when you're found out, and the person you lied to may want to hurt or murder you. Besides...............if you lie to your doctor about what is going on with you, the doctor may not be able to come up with the proper treatment, which could result in your death.
10. Thou shalt not covet. Why? Because if you obsess over something that someone else has, it could cause you to possibly steal it or murder them for it.
Personally? I think the ideas set up by the 10 Commandments are pretty good ones, because they show you a path on how to live happily and comfortably with others. And, if everyone around you is doing the same thing, then they are living happily and comfortably with you.
And..................fwiw...................almost all religions have some form of the 10 commandments incorporated into their doctrine, so you could almost say that they are universal truths.
And what do you do if you have only a few don'ts? Everything else..

I believe if we love Jesus we will keep his commandments. As Biker said, it is giving us a better life and a better community also. We are happier keeping the commandments then not keeping them. We learn obedience by the things we suffer sometimes. There are many benefits to keeping the Lords commandments.

The main problem I have with the 10 Commandments is the first 4 are all about maintaining that religion.
Yes, most religions have something like the 10 commandments. But many of them don't want to pay homage to Christianity any more than Christianity wants to pay homage to them.
