The First Crusade
The Crusades were a military campaign organized by the Pope, the Byzantine Empire, and western rulers to capture Jerusalem from Muslim control. The First Crusade began in 1095 when Pope Urban II called for arms.
The siege of Jerusalem
The Crusaders arrived in Jerusalem on June 7, 1099 and began a five-week siege on July 13. The Crusaders used siege towers and a battering ram to attack the city walls. On July 15, the Crusaders took the northern wall and the Muslim defenses collapsed.
The aftermath
The Crusaders massacred most of the non-Christian inhabitants and exiled the rest. They rebuilt the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and turned the Temple Mount over to the Knights Templar.
The Muslims retook Jerusalem from the Crusaders in October 1187 after the Battle of Hattin, which took place on July 4, 1187:
