California has certainly had houses fall into the ocean. Martha's Vineyard, not so many. You might look at average sea state at those locations. Martha's Vineyard can certainly be hit by hurricanes, but the AVERAGE wave height in California and Sussex, England is significantly higher than the coast of Massechusetts.
