I think you're being sincere, but I also think you're not seeing that many Christians who are diehard Trump loyalists HAVE turned Trump into an idol. If you need examples, I can round some up for you.

Of course Dems do that too, not only with certain presidents but they do that with government in general... but many of those Dems weren't professed Christians. The difference is, Christians should know better. Idolatry is a big sin.

I would say if you turn Trump into an idol--and most importantly to do not see and address the sin with God--you're not a Christian in the first place. You're a Christian-identifying person, which is not the same
