Bush increased his share of the Hispanic vote from 35% in 2000 to 40% in 2004 through his Latino-friendly policies and Bush carried 56% of the Latino vote in Florida in 2004 and a Republican nominee may need to secure 40% of the Latino vote win the White House and Romney only won 27% of the Latino vote because of his tough talk on immigration during the GOP primaries, which was much worse than McCain's 33% in 2008. Paul Ryan was an excellent VP candidate but Marco Rubio should be seriously considered in 2016 to court Latino voters especially in Florida and the GOP and Hispanic voters can find common ground on some conservative issues.

They really need to do both.

But the GOP has spent 50 years digging themselves in deeper with blacks.

Barry Goldwater opposed the Civil Rights Act and only won six states in 1964. (Five of those were ones were black folks weren't allowed to vote at the time.) That should have been a message to not even go there.

Instead, the GOP kept doubling down on stupid. Nixon's southern strategy, Reagan's imaginary Welfare Queen, Bush's Willie Horton ad, Corker's Playboy Mansion ad, Jesse Helms' "White hands" ad.

The guy who was smart about this was George W. Bush. He started doing the outreach and actually improved the GOP's standing with minorities. McCain let himself get mugged by the nativists, and Romney didn't even try to appeal to minorities.
