The big mistake is that we let them back into the union way too quickly. Next time we need to wait a few generations before we allow the scum of Dixie back into the nation.
If they were not "taken back", then they would have achieved the separation they wanted with secession.
Or are you proposing the north own the southern states as slaves?

States Rights has always been used as an excuse to deny peoples rights
Good point, since only individuals actually have rights.
States only have jurisdictions.

Over the last 30 years, do the numbers. Quake areas have been safer -- until they won't be. But you stated such fears in an area that has been safer than those other areas.

Slavery was part of the cause, another cause was that in the late eighteen fifties the slave states lost control of the federal government because immigration finally overcame the advantage the slaves gave the slave states in the census. Economics also figured into it, the south was falling further and further behind the free states economically. that unionist article reminds me of a family tragedy , my ancestor, a confederate captain, was wounded at shiloh and at gettysburg.Of course you do
his father had moved to new orleans from boston, shipping business, and wrote unionist articles in "the delta." after the stars and stripes were raised he could have been called a "collaborator."
that must have sparked some lively conversation at sunday dinner.
the south was full of unionists and there were copperheads all over the north. perhaps civil war is not as popular as some might think?
