How Trump's plan to deport undocumented immigrants threatens the U.S. farm workforce

‘Farmers are facing several challenges in keeping their businesses running, including climate change, bird flu outbreaks and higher costs for feed and fertilizer. Now, many of America's farmers must face the possibility of the Trump administration uprooting a huge part of the workforce with its threat of deporting millions of undocumented immigrants. "It's a lot of hands to hand-harvest fruits and vegetables," New Jersey farmer Kurt Alstede said.

More than two-thirds of U.S. crop workers are foreign born, according to the USDA. Many of them came to the country through the H-2A visas, but officials estimate that 42% of the workers are undocumented migrants. Since his first day in office, President Trump has already issued a slew of executive actions to start reshaping federal immigration and border policies. Many of them are expected to face significant legal challenges, but the administration has created fear and uncertainty in the community.’

Most farmers have only themselves to blame, having voted for Trump, against their own interests.

And the threat to the U.S. farm workforce is completely unnecessary, the consequence of Trump voters’ racism, bigotry, and hate, and their unwarranted obsession with the non-issue of immigration.

Didn't Progressives tell us that the way to prevent Illegal Immigration was to punish the employers?

Are any libs open to an agricultural guest worker program after trump has successfully closed the border?

We were for that before Trump pretended he closed the border.

the problem is, those visas are very hard to get, while sneaking under a fence is still free.

It should be pointed out that 41% of undocumented immigrants didn't sneak under a fence, they got legitimate visas they overstayed.

We have to assume a lot of those were H2A Visas.

This OP shows a complete misunderstanding of how economics works.

You really think the farmers are going to sit around lamenting that their illegal pickers are gone and watch their fruit and cukes rot? When there is a labor shortage in any industry or enterprise, the owner raises wages until the labor shortage is filled.

Among the thousands of rapists, drug dealers, murderers and shoplifters deported so far, how many farm workers were mixed in?

Now is the time for everyone to swallow their pride and compromise with the other side

An unaccompanied guest worker program for farm workers would be a good place to start

Mexico's president says he won't fight drug cartels on US orders, calls it a 'Mexico First' policy

But on Friday, while discussing his refusal to go after the cartels, he made it clear he viewed it as part of what he called a “Mexico First” policy.

“We are not going to act as policemen for any foreign government,” López Obrador said at his daily news briefing. “Mexico First. Our home comes first.”
She’s being stupid

Her government is under threat from the drug cartels

Yes, trump has hurt her pride

But Mexico is in deep doodoo and needs US assistance

It already exists.

H1-2A & H1-2B

They have to pay fees....have to guarantee minimum wages.......have to pay per diem or provide housing.....OSHA rules apply.....and the Workers have to pay TAXES.

But its not universal.

Farmer A would be at a severe disadvantage if he’s the only one doing it

That means we may never get mexico to cooperate with us in a war against the narco terrorists

Exactly. And farmers in America who play by the rules get FUCKED NOW.

By bringing in illegals business can lower pay, and violate the fuck out of OSHA

Politucians there are the Cartel
I’m afraid so

But the Cartel has to be crushed

I hope we can do so with Mexican government cooperation, but either way it must be done
