Don't minimize the "breakout". It took 88 days but it broke the back of the Germans in western Europe. The Germans had twice as many casuality as the Allies. The Germans were destroyed as an effective fighting force for the most part. After that they managed to pull off the Bulge counter offensive but that only lasted for about two weeks and then the door was wide open to enter Germany.
