/-----/ THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I've been saying that for 25 years. But the die-hard conspiracy nuts refuse to believe it. I've posted images of bridges that collapsed because a tanker fire beneath them softened the steel.

Not that I haven't repeated the facts here many times, but a few people here seem to be conspiracy nuts who have never met a wild theory they did not like. The fact is that once you get around 1500°, steel begins to weaken, soften, relax, otherwise, how else could annealing and tempering ever take place in metal forging?

The atoms become mobile, and the simple truth is that the WTC was a radical design for its time designed to extend skyscraper range by eliminating concrete while at the same time, controlling cost with a type of modified early monocoque design stabilized by a central, reinforced utility tower. Back then, no thought was ever given to jumbo jets hitting the WTC due to terrorism, they expected at worst maybe a private jet flying low lost in cloud cover might strike one, but the floor spans were simply too big and the thermal insulation designed to protect them from fire too inadequate to withstand the blast of a jetliner full of fuel to come crashing in under full power.

I don't know if the liability in the design was known and analyzed by the terrorists, but they lucked into hitting the WTC right where it was most vulnerable: basically, the floor spans were the key to holding the entire building up, and once 1-2 floor spans let go, collapse was inevitable as the outer wall not only lost all support, but impacted floors below were suddenly hit with a transient load perhaps 500% over their rated maximum, and the overload only went up from there.

Technically, I think the designers of the WTC might have been legally liable for the collapse as one might argue that the designs /should/ have been tested to withstand a worst-case disaster allowing for the bigger jets of the future, but I don't know if that was ever considered, and probably in the 1960s, the idea of us getting hit with such a terror attack here in the USA so low that any architect building to withstand such an attack with its concomitant added cost to the design, probably would have been laughed at, the proposal rejected, and probably would have jeopardized his career.

Jet fuel is more refined. It must be very pure and have very low impurities and moisture content to qualify as jet fuel.
