First....nobody advocates banning all guns. The only smart thing to do is to require background checks and try to prevent the mentally insane and criminals from getting their hands on complete arsenals. As far as other countries go, we are much different in many ways. On this subject of weapons, we are much more diverse than most countries. Some of our cultures are much more violent than others. The demographics are clear on this.

Other countries also have laws against recreational narcotics just like the US. So why are drugs such a huge problem here compared to other industrialized worlds? We have the second highest percentage of our population locked up, most of them because of drugs. Drugs have been illegal to sell and use as long as I've been alive. If anything, it seems there are more drugs today than ever.

The Bush tax cuts did create jobs. In fact, my employer purchased an entire new fleet of trucks. Our customers invested in machinery--some that cost them over a million dollars. Others added on to their existing buildings or otherwise opened up satellite warehouses. It was a great time, and if not for the housing bubble and collapse, I believe we would have enjoyed a good economy right up to Bush's last day in office.

You not only do not have to go through any training, you do not even have to show someone that you know where the safety is. Any yahoo can strap on a pistol, and take it anywhere unless the owner of the property forbids firearms. You need to have a balance between armed citizens and authority. Armed carries need to respect police, and police need to respect armed citizens. It's difficult to have that mutual respect when the police don't know if a bad guy is armed and the law-abiding citizen doesn't know if he or she is going to be harassed by the police.

If you are over age 65, and have an accident, you have to go through the complete driving course and test again.A lady I know who is 82 had an accident 2 months ago, and could not pass the drivers test, so they took her license. So, unlike guns, you have to demonstrate proficiency with an automobile. In Az, of course, you can still carry your gun around while senile.

Over here I witnessed people so old that when their name was called, they had to get up on a walker to approach the table. It took them so long that the DMV worker called the next person while waiting for the guy on the walker to get up there.

I've seen elderly people fail the eye exam, but the worker just shrugged it off. Most of us have parents or grand parents we think of who are that age where we couldn't dream of taking their license away. Your drivers license is your freedom.

When news of a shocking incident hits some people, they look at the means of the bad thing happening and seek to control it. In this case guns. And being empassioned they're not thinking well and so say dumb things like ban the means the bad person did the bad thing. It's to be expected.

Of course people who think well even during times of crisis know better. You don't ban the car because a drunk takes out a schoolbus filled with happy little kids. Nor do you ban the alcohol. You simply see to it the drunk is executed or thrown down a deep dark hole somewhere where he'll never see daylight ever again.

Laws don't prevent criminals bent on doing criminal things. It's illegal to assassinate politicians yet people've done that throughout history. It's illegal to download intellectual property you didn't pay for, but just about everyone does that Laws don't prevent crime, they simply make it possible to punish criminals after the fact. But even if all private gun ownership was made illegal overnight, criminal-minded people would still get a hold of guns. And as it stands it's actually a lot easier to buy a gun on the street than in a gun store.

It's crowd-pleasing vote-winning tactics to promise to ban guns after shootings. But despite decades of doing that, we still have shootings. The bans don't prevent the next one.

Well, I think that it speaks volumes that this liberal moved to a place that has no floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornados, while that conservative continues to live in a city that is below sea level in many parts, and has suffered the worst flooding and hurricane damage in American history, with nothing but luck to count on that the whole thing would not happen again in any hurricane season.

Then again, we all know that your flood insurance is not actuarially sound, and is, in fact, subsidized by the government and the rest of the nation, which is a form of "free shit" that New Orleans residents enjoy from the government. (My flood insurance used to cost me $450 per year, and my Katrina claim was $115,000). So, maybe I am being unfair. It sounds like you are not really a conservative, but more like a democrat.
