Homeschooling: Your Views, Please

Excellent alternative to Government-run Schooling. Recent studies are showing that kids who are Homeschooled, are better-prepared for College. So don't believe the Communist/Progressive hype about Homeschooling being 'Evil.' They just want to keep the status quo. They want to control you and your child. They want to suppress all alternatives.
Much more to life than a piece of paper declaring that you earned a degree.

I hear ya, but recent studies are contradicting the Communist/Progressive claim that Homeschooling is 'Evil.' The kids are actually getting better-prepared for College.
I wouldn't say it's evil... just different. Some kids need more social interaction... than others. Some parents may be better teachers than the ones at the local school, some are not. Some kids don't need homeschooling or public schools to learn. Some kids need both.

I think ALL kids need both. They need social interaction AND parent interaction and even if they attend public/private school, they still need homeschooling in areas where the institutions may be lacking. Sending our kids off to school does not automagically free us of our responsibility as parents to ensure our kids have ALL the skills they need to survive and thrive as adults.

Ah, the ole 'Social Interaction' argument against Homeschooling is so stale and outdated. There are many ways to provide your child with social interaction. You don't have to send them to Public Schools to get it. But you do make some good points. Thanks.

That's it, send them to a soup kitchen.. Mine would have laughed at me if I told them that.

That illustrates a problem between you and your kids, that you would tolerate such disrespect. Volunteering to help the less fortunate is an extremely valuable life lesson. It wouldn't hurt if ALL kids got to do that once in while.

I think of public school as sort of like a summer camp that you already paid for. Why not send them to camp to have some fun and learn stuff? You already paid for it.

When anyone can demonstrate that homeschooled kids are actually LESS well-adjusted as adults than their government schooled counterparts, we can talk. Until then, it's merely a theory that they MUST be missing out on something important by not being immersed in a group of their peers for 6 hours a day. Think of it this way, most of our presidents for the first half of our nation's history were homeschooled in one way or another, and had more interaction with adults than a bunch of other kids. Seemed to work out pretty well for them.

Not at the expense of them getting a better education. Yes, homeschooling represents a wastage of the money you had confiscated in your local taxes, PLUS the expense of the curriculum you use. It's something you have to consider.

Let's be real, our Public School System is a mess. All the Teachers constantly whining about how they're so mistreated, and shoving political agendas like 'Global Warming' down the kids' throats. Choosing an alternative is probably the right way to go at this point. Why send your child into that quagmire? Why take the risk?

It's not a matter of what's better. You already paid for the schooling. You don't have a choice in the matter. That said some parents don't want their kids heading off to mingle with other kids. They want their kids to be sheltered. I suppose whether that's best is up to the parent. If the school sucks and the kids are bad yeah no sense in sending your kid into a bad environment.

If summer camp taught your kids that one of your favorite hobbies, past times or political/social views were criminal or "fringe" would you send them back to that camp? Just because it is free does not mean it's right for me. ;)

I think we both know it's neither free nor prepaid these days. The taxes that fund these schools keep rising, while the "pay to play" fees for activities and basic supplies keep increasing as well.

Not so much where I live. Small town... small school... everyone knows everyone. Global warming is taught as an example of group hysteria.

Bingo. It helps when you live in a sane school district. Oh and... school's not free.

Spot-On. The 'Social Interaction' argument against Homeschooling is absurd and outdated. There are plenty of ways for parents to provide Social Interaction for their children. And recent studies are showing Homeschooled kids are actually better-prepared for College. The Communists/Progressives just want to keep the status quo. They want to control you and your child forever. The ole 'Social Interaction' argument is all they have left.

Define social interaction. Social interaction is outdated? Huh?

Also a parent who cares enough about their child's education will also care to see that their child has opportunity to have age appropriate friends and activities. All the hundreds of homeschooled kids I know are involved in sports, music groups, church, volunteer activities, and similar outlets. They are well rounded, confident, well socialized young people who have the added benefit of not being ignored by teachers, not being exposed to bullying and other destructive influences too often prevalent in the public schools, and ability to learn and achieve according to their abilities..

The great nephew I spoke about who was homeschooled was a collegiate grand champion in tie down roping in two of the four years he was in college. And he did graduate with honors in four years from a Division A university. You make a lot of friends.

Why go to college and not homeschool for that too?

I don't discount that there may be some "slugs off the street" that are homeschoolers, but I can't seem to find them among the many publicly-schooled slugs off the street. I suppose I need some help pointing them out.
Publically schooled people also need a degree to teach. That should also be required for homeschoolers.
I don't know about that. But I do think some sort of monitoring is necessary. I know a woman who took her kids out, claimed to HS and both kids don't have any education above middle school.
To me, it's just a little scary the way homeschooling has been trending. I am all for the niece who has the degrees, she is a very responsible girl and will do her job making sure they will study. I just don't see everyone being that responsible.
yet home schooled kids outperform public school kids on every measure.

Interesting.
That's just not true. They don't ever have any interaction or competition with other kids and their views.
Of course they do.

I know kids who are home schooled that play little league, take music lessons, art classes and even go to other kid's houses for parties and sleep overs.

Why do you think these kids are prisoners in their own homes?

And yes they do outperform public school kids

College is a little different environment. The students are expected to be adults, for one thing. Second, someone is paying a hefty price tag for the student to attend, so there's more of an incentive to actually learn something. Granted, there are students who shouldn't be there. Third, people are already doing that. Ever hear of online universities? You can get a degree today from home.

So far there is no structure in America to recognize homeschooled credit at college level. Given the shitty education many college students receive, however, I would support achieving one's degree via independent studies.
