Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has a long history of peddling conspiracy theories: Climate change is a hoax, vaccines cause autism, President Barack Obama is a Muslim and was not born in the United States, the presidential election is rigged ― the list goes on.
Now, thanks to Democrat Hillary Clinton, Trump and his most strident supporters can be better protected from their own paranoia.
In a post to Twitter Monday evening, Clinton introduced the “Trump Tin Foil Hat” ― a “stylish update” to his famous “Make America Great Again” caps.
The Twitter post links to Clinton’s website, where her campaign provides a step-by-step guide to making your own conspiracy headwear.
“Donald Trump is a man on a mission: he’ll get to the bottom of any theory, no matter how far-out it may seem,” the cutout reads. “This morning, he claimed pollsters are manipulating the polls to show him losing.”
The instructions list several other bogus conspiracies championed by Trump ― that Clinton and Obama founded ISIS, that Sen. Ted Cruz’s father played a role in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and that thousands in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“In fact, if we elected Donald Trump,” the cutout reads, “we could have a president dedicated to the truth: where is Elvis? Where did we film the moon landing?”
The new caps, the Clinton campaign added, will ensure Trump can “continue his quest for knowledge without any ... intrusion.”
The tin-foil hat that has come to symbolize paranoia and belief in conspiracy theories originated in a 1927 science-fiction novel that suggested foil would block mind control, according to a 2013 article in Business Insider. It doesn’t work, a 2005 MIT study found.
