Next weekend, some parents of Lanigan Central High School graduates will host a “safe grad” party at an undisclosed location. Graduates planning to attend the Saturday night drinking party had to submit a form signed by their parents in advance of the party. The graduates had to pre-order and pre-pay for the alcohol they’ll drink during the 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. party. Graduates and their guests, who have to be in Grade 10 or higher, will be allowed up to 10 drinks, including beer, vodka, rum and rye.

10 drink limit? ha If it was me I would definitely sneak some in. But I also think that this will significantly reduce Drunk Driving. From experience WVU cracked down on a street that had parties every weekend, and banned kegs from frats. In the last 2 years more students are getting DUIs and it's socially acceptable to drive drunk because of the situation. I agree with you that booze should be kept away from kids, but at the same time it's hypocritical to act as if alcohol will ruin kids' lives.

These 18 year old children must not be able to join the military IMO. I had about 6 drinks when I graduated legally. I was smart enough to crash in my car rather than crash my car.

Why not ? our politicians "legally break the law" all the time often with far flimsier excuses than "I had a note from my parents".

Didn't have this problem when I graduated, everybody drank together before during and after the ceremony, because this is a normal 18+ country. But even my friends in the states, as soon as graduation ended, went over to a hotel and got absolutely hammered.

Uh...actually, there's very few laws that prohibit alcohol consumption by people under 21; I believe only seven states have such laws on the books. MLDA 21 is somewhat of a misnomer; the national minimum purchase age is 21, but those under that age are often permitted to legally consume alcohol. For example, minors in Texas can typically drink with parental consent.

I know. It's just that I got the impression he was one of the many people who believe that we have a set national drinking age.

Something is seriously flawed with your thinking if you think it's okay for 10 graders, a bunch of 15 and 16 year olds to drink.


The drinking age is 21 anyone under that is breaking the law. I'm sure we all wish we could just change laws and make them up as we go along just because we think they are stupid to begin with. We cannot legally break laws just because we have a note from Mommy and Daddy.

The parent's holding the party are idiots, the parents giving their permission are idiots. Doesn't matter that 'the kids will drink anyway'; condoning underage drinking is wrong. Why the hell do parents think it's their job to be their kid's 'friend'? Whatever happened to parents being parents? What spineless jellyfish so many have become. Have the parent's holding the party a fucking clue what they're in for if one of these kids gets hurt?
