If the Russians had their carriers near our shores, and they were arming the enemy that we are currently at war with, resulting in the death of 100K Americans, we would "buzz" them too. We've been doing that to each other for decades, and it's really easy for us to improve our relations with Russia. We could start by not extending a Cold War dinosaur into the former Soviet Bloc, in Russia's sphere of influence and neighborhood. How would we like it if Russia was deploying its military in Mexico and building military bases?
I'm a socialist, and I might have a "soft spot"/bias for Russia in my heart more so than I have for other countries other than the USA, but I would be in favor of war with Russia if they were deploying their troops and hardware in Mexico, Canada, or any other country in the Western Hemisphere. What does that have to do with justifying maintaining an adversarial stance against Russia and China? We should have a cooperative, friendly relationship with them provided they're not trying to invade us or do us harm, militarily. Economic competition doesn't qualify or justify us going to war with our major competitors.
