GOP senator moves to end dual citizenship, says Americans must choose

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, plans to introduce legislation on Monday that would require any U.S. citizen who has foreign citizenship to choose between the two countries, Fox News Digital has learned. It would also require that if a U.S. citizen seeks a foreign citizenship in the future, that person would effectively give up their U.S. citizenship.

Moreno, who was born in Colombia, said in a statement to Fox News Digital, "One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so."

"It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and only to the United States of America. Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege — and if you want to be an American — it’s all or nothing," he said. "It’s time to end dual citizenship for good."

Does anyone think this would ever happen?

How many folks in this country have dual citizenship?

Which countries are you allowed to have dual citizenship with?

Anyone born to a service member in Guatanamo Bay automatically has Cuban and American citizenship.

Pretty cool.

I can imagine a fair few Israelis complaining about that.

Why should we allow jewish feelings to be a factor in anything?

In answering the question posted in the OP, I stated belief the bill would not become law. In thinking of the matter isn't logical to consider where opposition might come from?

Soon after my original response my belief why this bill won't see the light of day became even stronger.
I'll put it to you in just three letters: IRS.

I’ve supported the concept for decades. A man cannot serve two masters. Loyalty is paramount to citizenship so far as I’m concerned, and you cannot be fully loyal to the United States if you have citizenship somewhere else.

A country isn't my master.

A country isn't my master.
If your loyalties belong to someone or something (religion, gender, sex, ideology, etc…) other than this nation, then you don’t belong here. We’ve got a century now of seeing Whst allowing that sort of mentality to continue brings to this country; and it isn’t good.

Never understood the duel citizenship thing. Pick one. Change it from one to another if you want. But, you can't be a citizen of two different countries. Makes you wonder though, democrats are big on claiming that if you are born in the US then you are a US citizen, so, if that's true, then you are a citizen of the country you are born in and cannot change. You are born where you are born. That's where you are a citizen from.

How do? Why should any foreign national hold office?
I didn't see anything about a foreign national holding office in the United States. I was commenting on individuals who simply cannot be content to manage their own lives but instead have a compulsion to try to control what other people can do with their lives.

Anything that other people do that is not unlawful is no one else's business. There are valid reasons that people want to maintain dual citizenship, including perhaps needing a safe place to escape to if things here in the U.S. get a bit too crazy.

Limiting one's freedom of movement is NEVER a good thing.

U.S. citizens are not subjects. What's with this loyalty & two masters crap?

we will never find a way to verify allegiance

I found this in the news today which I thought was interesting:

"The bill, if passed, could affect members of the president’s own family.

Melania Trump, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2006, “remains a dual citizen of the U.S. and Slovenia, as does her son Barron,” according to Mary Jordan’s 2020 biography The Art of Her Deal.

Jordan reiterated this in a 2024 interview, noting that both Melania and Barron “continue to have joint citizenship.”

In the interview, Jordan said that maintaining Slovenian citizenship offered practical benefits for Barron, including the ability “to work freely in all of Europe much more easily.”

She added that
Melania sought to give her son “more options” and emphasized that he holds a Slovenian passport and speaks Slovenian."
