Garden Of The Gods...

We were there before gambling, when it was just a quiet little mining town. It has changed a lot since then. I miss the old Cripple.
Been through Cripple Creek a few times, going through on drives down Phantom Canyon road which the wife loved. Never wanted to live up there though.

My building was down on the right. I opened an Ice Cream shop and made the cones. The mistakes I put in a bag and on my way home I would feed them to the donkeys that everyone comes to Cripple to see. Then I put a fan in the transom above the door and spead the smell of those cones all over town. The donkeys followed the scent and parked themselves right outside of my shop. Everyone that came to see them had to have one of my cones. Fun times.

Not an easy place to live. We lived out behind Mt. Pisgah for years and years. No electric, no humans, mama bear and babies in the cave next to the driveway. They ate the dog's food every day. Longest view of the Continental Divide in the country from my porch. Now there are 6 others houses back there. It's like a subdivision now! :(

After I retired from the Navy back in 2002, a friend of mine and I took a motorcycle ride through CO, with the intent of riding across all the highest roads we could find, with the final ascent culminating on top of Pike's Peak on July 4th. Spent the night of July 3rd in Cripple Creek because Dano had told me it was possible to get a steak breakfast for only a buck there. Guess what? I actually had a steak breakfast with scrambled eggs and toast at one of the casinos there for only a buck! Was a fairly decent place to visit, and lots of good roads to ride a scooter around there.

If you decided to go to the top of Pike's Peak, be prepared for REALLY thin air up there, as it's 14,100 ft at the top. Pissed off my friend Dano when we were up there, because he wanted a cigarette, and we found out that Zippo lighters won't light up there due to the lack of oxygen. He had to wait until we got back down to the visitor center at the bottom to light up.

Just booked a flight to Denver for late August so I can check off another bucket list item: Photographing Garden of the Gods.

Anyone here ever visited? Tips?
I visited in the summer of 1972, as a teen with my parents. As I recall, it was beautiful.
