A true map of the world cannot be produced on a flat surface because the world is round.

Take a photograph of the Earth and stretch it around a grapefruit. It doesn't work. Map makers have wrestled with this since maps began. They do the best they can do and that's it. Only on a globe can an accurate map of the Earth be placed.
