I lived on a small farm in Suffolk County as a kid during that period. Our shelter doubled as a root cellar. If you have plenty of ground or support structure above you and you stay there for several weeks, you can greatly limit the radiation exposure.In reality you could probably survive a nuclear bomb in a storm cellar if you're far enough away from ground zero. Yeah, you'll still get a "healthy" dose of radiation, but you will have survived the blast.

JFK did not want to negotiate with Khrushchev when Khrushchev shipped missiles to Cuba in retaliation for the USA putting missiles in eastern Turkey.
That almost got almost everybody in the USA and Russia killed.
Ultimately Russia would have survive the nuclear holocaust because they have a larger land mass. It is unlikely that the USA would have survived. So JFK was bluffing but the bluff worked.
There would not have been any superpower for a while. China would have needed time to become the next one.
