A record-breaking heat dome will develop near the West Coast late this week, smashing records and sending temperatures into the triple digits through next week — when it will feel like summer during the final days of winter.

This follows the warmest start to March on record for the United States.

There are many potential firsts for March on the horizon: It could reach 100 degrees in Los Angeles next week, after record-breaking 95-degree heat on Thursday and Friday. In Phoenix next week, temperatures could exceed 100 degrees several times. It could also reach the century mark in Las Vegas.

Climate change ‘beyond scientific dispute,’ National Academies report says​


One of the United States’ most respected scientific bodies rejected claims from Trump administration officials that rising temperatures posed little danger, saying on Wednesday the scientific evidence of climate change was “beyond scientific dispute” and that impacts on the nation are worsening.

The conclusion from the the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine differs starkly from a draft report issued by the Energy Department in July, in which a panel of scientists known for their contrarian views argued that the risks of climate change have been overblown.

Automatic U.S. military draft registration planned by December, filing shows​

The Selective Service System plans to automatically register eligible American men between ages 18 and 26 for a U.S. military draft by December, almost a half-century after compulsory registration for the draft for that age group became law, a government filing shows.

The agency’s proposal would implement a requirement passed by Congress in December in the National Defense Authorization Act to include automatic registration for “every male citizen of the United States” between those ages.

There has not been a military draft since 1973, when U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam was winding down.

But in 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed a law requiring men between the ages of 18 to 25 to register for military conscription. Since then, the federal government has relied on voluntary compliance with that law, not automatic enrollment. Men who are 26 are allowed to enroll late to comply with the law.

The Selective Service has said that in 2024, 81% of all eligible men registered, a 3 percentage point drop from the previous year.
