Yep. Most people do trash their cars when the engine or transmission is going to cost more than what the Blue Book says that the car is worth.

And, interestingly enough, here in SC there are LOTS of vehicles with salvage titles on the road. Salvage titles are issued basically when the insurance company totals a car, and they total them quite often in this state. I've never seen a place with so many cars for sale with salvage titles.

Fuel cell vehicles are just not economically viable. They are significantly more expensive, the fuel is difficult to transport and store and there is just no infrastructure in place to distribute it.

Plus the fuel cells have a lifespan, of generally around 75,000 miles. At that point you have to replace them, and that is a very expensive process.

Until those are solved, it will never become common.

Oh, this is complete nonsense. One only has to look at cars in the past and today to see this.

The first car I bought was a 1970 Buick Estate Wagon. Nothing really special, and as was common the engine was massive. A 7.6 liter (455 ci) V8 370 horsepower beast that could pull a massive 30' travel trailer. And every vehicle I ever owned made before 1990 always had a pretty good towing capacity because the engines were always much more powerful than needed. Even if it was a Toyota, Datsun, or Honda.

Then I got a 1995 Chevy Cavalier. Good size car, 2.2 liter engine, 120 horsepower. The thing was sluggish even towing a small trailer as there was nothing left in the engine for towing capacity.

And today it is even worse. Look at the stats for damned near anything other than a pickup, and there is just nothing left for towing capacity. If your claim was even remotely true, then they would have plenty of towing capacity. But they don't, the engines are a fraction of what they used to be.

Go back 40 years ago, and it was common to see a "family car" towing a large trailer.

Good luck pulling much larger than a rollerskate behind a car today.

Realistically, interstate travel for a family of 5 could be accomplished in a 75HP vehicle with a small 3 cyl engine just as timely and comfortably as a vehicle doing the exact same thing but with 300-500hp. The excess power is just human vanity and excess.
No one wants to deal with the obvious. It's too lucrative to satisfy human arrogance and excess.

Only trucks and commercial vehicles hauling cargo and certain passenger vehicles towing heavy loads need all that extra power and THAT small requirement could be met with dedicated purpose electric motors.

And that’s why when a battery is damaged and the repair is worth more then the insurance will pay, totaling the car is an option. It’s not rocket science. ICE cars suffer the same possible fate. Picking up these wreckage’s for little then salvaging the parts can still save a lot and is worth while for EVs as well as ICE. If there is a repair a Consumer can do themselves, a salvage yard is an excellent first option.
