Erasing The Past

I have no problem with statues of Hitler and Stalin being torn down. After all, these were evil men in which there was no good.

But should the Founding Fathers be treated the same?

Yes or no?

No.

And since I never said or implied such a thing should happen, why did you make a false statement about what I supposedly said?

For some of the stuff they did, yes.

The Confederates, definitely need to be treated the same.

So for some of the stuff they did their memory should be eradicated?

The Constitution is a document that outlines our freedoms, in fact, Thomas Jefferson wanted to include freeing slaves in the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson also outlawed most of the Alien and Sedition Acts that made it illegal to speak out against government. Can you imagine what the country would be like had he not risen up to get rid of those provisions? In fact, the provision that were still left, FDR used to lock up innocent Japanese Americans.

1.In so many ways, George Orwell foretold what we have been witnessing: ā€˜1984ā€™ is the current Democrat control of society. Removing the statues, all of which are of Democrats, is just one aspect.

Statues are being vandalized for one reason and one reason only - they are white. I doesn't make any difference whether the men were fierce abolitionists or actively promoted racism. If they are white they are a target.

This has nothing to do with "social justice" It is simply an attack on anything white.

If Jefferson wanted to free the slaves he could have. He wrote the document. So let's not lie.
The political pressure not to free the slaves was too great for him.

Most don't realize this but had South Caroline not agreed to join the Revolution it would have failed. In fact, most of the battles of the Revolution was fought in South Carolina, something that is not taught in our history classes. This is because the greatest amount of wealth and power came from the slave state.

Now had the Revolution not occurred, slavery would have continued.

I will ask you the same question.

Are the Founding Fathers comparable to Hitler and Stalin? Should their monuments be torn down as well?

Those are two separate questions.

No, they aren't comparable.

There's a long gap between "as bad as Hitler" and "Totally deserves a monument".

The problem is, our history is basically one of rich white people exploiting everyone else.. Immigrants, blacks, Indigenous people. We like to romanticize ourselves as this great egalitarian society, but let's be honest, we've had 45 presidents and most of them have been WASPs.

If you are a Jew, you don't think Hitler deserves a monument.
If you are a Cherokee, you don't think Andrew Jackson deserves a monument.
If you are a black person, you don't think Jefferson Davis deserves a monument.

So we are having a discussion about whether or not these men need to be reverred... of course, they will be remembered. Nobody is going to forget who Hitler was, even with no statues of him.

South Carolina? Really? Get real.

the only reason Jefferson didn't stop slavery was because he was raping the shit out of Sally Hemmings and living large on the hard work of the slaves of Monticello.

The point was, the Founding Fathers KNEW slavery was wrong, they KNEW it ran contrary to the egalitarian society they were trying to establish based on Enlightenment philosophies. They kept it in there, anyway. It haunts us to this very day.

I'm not sure I want to tear the statues of Jefferson down, but re-evaluating him might be in order.

Actually, I really don't fault FDR for BRIEFLY detaining Japanese immigrants and citizens in 1942 (most of them were released by 1943.) The reality- the Axis found collaborators in every country they invaded, did you really want to leave 100K collaborators in a potential war zone.

Thomas Jefferson didn't include freeing the slaves in the DOI or the Constitution. That's the point. He personally benefitted from slavery and sexually abused a woman for years because she was his property (and happened to be his dead wife's half-sister because his father in law did the same kind of stuff.)

No one said "eradicate" his memory. But put him in a position of less honor? Maybe. Worth having the discussion, to be sure.

Quite a leap there. No, there is no defense of what FDR did.

Many of our heralded founding fathers owned slaves. Out of the 55 so-called founders, 26 owned slaves and one owned a slave ship. The slave owners were:

Richard Bassett (DE), Jacob Broom (DE), John Dickinson (DE), George Read (DE),William Houstoun (GA), William Few (GA), William Samuel Johnson (CT), Daniel Carroll (MD), Luther Martin (MD), John Francis Mercer (MD), Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer (MD), William Livingston (NJ), William Blount (NC), William Richardson Davie (NC), Alexander Martin (NC), Richard Dobbs Spaight (NC), Pierce Butler (SC), Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (SC), Charles Pinckney (SC), John Rutledge (SC), John Blair (VA), James Madison (VA), George Mason (VA), Edmund Randolph (VA), George Washington (VA), George Wythe (VA), Robert Morris (PA)*.

*Robert Morris owned a slave ship.
So while he didnā€™t own slave, he was a prime participant in the industry.

We are on President number 45 as of this writing. Out of these 45 presidents, it is a fact that 12 of them owned slaves. Thatā€™s more than ONE FOURTH of our presidents. Ten of the twelve owned slaves while in office. While many want to make this so clean and easy, I am not going to do that. It must be understood that presidents of this country conducted the business of slavery in the white house. They owned slaves in the white house. They beat their slaves in the white house. They bought and sold slaves from the white house. The ten slave owners while in the white house were:

Our nations ā€œfatherā€ George Washington owned over 300 slaves. Thomas Jefferson owned 600 slaves. His slave mistress even had children by him. Think about that each time you see a black person with the last name Jefferson. James Madison owned more than 100 slaves. James Monroe owned 75 slaves. Andrew Jackson owned 200 slaves. Martin Van Buren owned 1 slave. I guess he would be considered a nice and humane slave owner. After all, he could have owned 600. William Henry Harrison owned 11 slaves. John Tyler owned 70 slaves. James K. Polk owned 25 slaves. Zachary Taylor owned about 150 slaves. These 10 men owned slaves as duly elected presidents of the United States. This is a hard truth of the American past that MUST be faced.

This is not about holding anyone from the past to modern standards. I bristle when I hear this, especially after I must hear about how great the founders were. They are being held to the standards they put on parchment themselves. As for the,ā€ I wasnā€™t alive thenā€ excuse, none of these men are here today, if we cannot hold them accountable for their racism then why can we credit them? Is there anyone here today who was around for the revolutionary war?
Barack Obamaā€™s Ancestors Owned Slaves
But it looks as if there will be a problem with the statue of the 44th POTUS, especially in todayā€™s hypersensitive racial climate. No, weā€™re not talking about disgusting neo-Nazis protesting a statue dedicated to a Black Man. Nor is it because as president economic conditions for African-Americas relative to Caucasians declined. Bu.t no Obama statue should be built because he is descended from slave-owners.
Real quick here...Do you see something amiss?

Historical revisionism that changes a regional North/South issue into modern political patronage.

Slavery existed in the south for 200 years before the Democratic Party was formed. To claim that slavery was somehow the fault of either modern political party is pure deception
It exposes the pure evil of Republicanism and white supremacy.

3. Letā€™s begin destroying the lies with this one, that the Democrat South didnā€™t start the war.

Are you sure you want to go down this route? Most other Trump traitors revise history to claim that the peaceful south was invaded for no reason by the north. Are you really willing to go against cult dogma?

I agree that It really isn't debatable that the south started the fighting. Even before Ft. Sumter, they violently attacked a bunch of federal arsenals all around the south. And the south was the first side to raise an army. The Union didn't raise an army until after the Confederacy did.

Anyways, since the old southern Democrats are now Republicans, the rest of your piece condemns modern Republicans.

I just proved that the USAToday claim is a lie.

And, no, the old Democrats are the new Democrats/
