Energy Crisis May Trigger Winter Blackouts Across US: Coal Firm CEO

Instead if getting your news from the Moonies get your head out of your ass.

I posted this last Sunday, and here you are doing exactly as I predicted.

NG supplies in the USA aren't impacted by China. Derp.

The power plant in Gentry, Arkansass is a coal fired plant and the train delivers coal to it several times a day and night.

Just more of that good job Biden and the leftoids are doing.

The left ruins everything it touches.

“We’ve actually had discussions with power utilities who are concerned that they simply will have to implement blackouts this winter,” Ernie Thrasher, the head of Xcoal Energy & Resources, was quoted by Bloomberg News as saying. “They don’t see where the fuel is coming from to meet demand.”
He added that utilities are switching from natural gas to coal during the fall and winter months to keep up with the demand.
The global demand for power has increased as economies attempt to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, triggering natural gas shortages primarily in Europe and Asia.
Power producers including Duke Energy have warned customers that bills may spike during this winter. Duke’s Piedmont Natural Gas unit stated Tuesday that higher gas prices and low production will raise customer bills by approximately $11 per month in North and South Carolina.
“That whole supply chain is stretched beyond its limits,” Thrasher, whose Pennsylvania-based company works in coal logistics, said. “It’s going to be a challenging winter for us here in the United States.”
Meanwhile, the New York State Public Service Commission told Bloomberg it is monitoring utilities in New York to determine whether there’s enough fuel for the winter.
“The utilities have hedged approximately 70 percent” of their residential electricity needs, the agency said, adding that it expects to meet demand this season.
The benchmark U.S. natural gas contract has been rallying, lately hitting seven-year highs, but its $5.62 per million British thermal units price is a far cry from the $30-plus being paid in Europe and Asia, Reuters noted.
However, the U.S. market is worried about the coming cold, particularly in New England and California—where prices for gas to be delivered this winter are far above the nationwide benchmark. In New England, buyers are expecting gas to cost more than $20 per million British thermal units.
In New England, gas for January delivery is soaring, trading this week at more than $22 at the region’s Algonquin hub, which would be the highest price paid in a month since January and February of 2014.

China is the largest exporter of coal in the world, we'll just have to buy it from them ( like everything else ).

Actually, they aren't in the top 5 of exporters of coal.

China is the largest importer of coal though.

Fake news from the wildly unreliable Epoch Times.

Also, leftists are a tiny, powerless group ruining nothing - you're referring to liberals/Democrats.

Coal is dying because natural gas became the preferred choice between the two. While the natural gas industry invested billions in innovation the coal industry simply invested in politicians.
The reason natural gas became more popular was because of legislation about emissions from burning coal as a fuel. It is possible to still use coal but the extra scrubbers are expensive to install and maintain...and then there's the carbon credits that need to be purchased from Tesla or someone. Making coal burning unaffordable for most generation facilities.

Natural gas (even at $5.50/mbtu) is cheaper than coal because it requires little to no scrubbing of the exhaust.

However...if supplies of ethane become tight and insufficient coal suppliers can be tapped for coal. But these power plants are going to need regulation relief or something. It's either that or we literally will have grid failures like when the whole east coast went down. (From Canada to Georgia)

It's yet another chance for Biden to shine or blunder if there are rolling blackouts this winter. Because electric cars/busses/planes are only OK if plugging them in actually works.

$11 a month my ass.....try $200.00/month more than the currently gouged rates.

Natural Gas & de-regulated Electric Grid Failed Texas last Winter.
You are quickly becoming the most stupid poster on this board.....they failed because the state allowed the federal governemtn to cajol them into closure of the plants .... you totally clueless nincompoop. How can the coal and gas plants help if they are C...L..O..S..E...D?

Coal as an energy reserve is acceptable to practically everyone. Future generations might need some after we suck up and burn everything else.

There's a reason they call electrical theory "theories".

Because no one has actually seen an electron.

Now I still don't recommend touching power lines because that theory will kill you.

But they are charging you for just a theory.

Actually we don't use soft, "yellow" coal for anything....and we have even larger reserves of it and can make more.
It's utilization was part of Bush's "clean Coal technology" initiative. That scared OPEC (and fracking of the Permian Basin) into more production.

We can turn yellow coal into light sweet crude for around $70-$80/barrel.

One of the byproducts of burning coal is drywall.
Yes, the walls in every home and apartment and office building is made from the leftovers after burning coal. There is a drywall plant located near every coal burning facility in America...for a good reason.

I won't be surprised if it happens in Texas again.

It can't happen here.

My state isn't dependent on fossil fuel for energy as much as the rest of the nation.

We get 60% of our energy from water. Another 20% from alternative sources such as wind and solar. It's required by law here. The other 20% is from a combination of natural gas and nuclear.

So while other states didn't divest in their energy sources, us looney liberals in my state did.

We generate more energy than we use so we sell our excess to other states for a profit.

Have fun with your blackouts. LOL.

If there are other uses for coal that do not poison the planet the industry should have been trying to develop them into something marketable.

They have and did.

You should realize by now that the truth isn't relevant when it comes to politics and public policy.

Hadn't heard that so I checked it out. Turns out the gypsum is a byproduct of the sulfur scrubbers rather the coal.

You pay 200 dollars a month for electricity?

Wow.

I haven't gotten my electric bill for this month yet but last month was around 55 dollars. It was summer rates though.

Winter rates are higher. I pay around 100 dollars a month in the winter.

But then my state has the second lowest electric rates in the nation.

We don't use any coal. We started shutting down our last coal fired plant in 2005. It's completely shutdown now.

Yet we have the second lowest electric rates in the nation, we generate more electricity than we use so we sell it to other states for a profit and we don't pollute our environment to generate energy.

Have fun with your high electric rates. I hope you aren't in one of the states that the far right is predicting to lose their electricity this winter. Stay warm.

I wasn't going to get that technical but yes...what you are saying is right.
