The ones that three years ago prevented us from e-Filing beause someone had already filed a tax return using my wifes SSN. We had to file on paper and it took months to get a return. Based on employement history they found that ours was the legal tax return and that my wife was the subject of suspected identiy theft.

Every time you use your SS number on a form (say at a doctor's office) you run the risk of someone selling/using it, no different from credit card ID theft.

The difference is CC companies have systems that easily flag odd purchases and let the holder know.

The outdated .gov systems can't do that.

I complained about when Obama renewed the Patriot Act. And I mentioned it multiple times when Republicans said we never criticized Obama. See also Obama's treatment of the press. It's WRONG on every level. But Obama received an ENORMOUS amount of criticism on both policies, and deservedly so.

Clearly, you've never tried to collect money the government owes you. I have and it takes time, persistence, and an absolutely dogged determination, to get the money. Poor people don't complain when they're screwed over by the government. Because complaining is so complex and difficult, they just accept it. Happens all of the time. And many of the duplicate numbers are dead people who aren't complaining about anything.

I have a friend who had her government disability payments cut off in December, right before Christmas. She still can't get the payments reinstated, but she did get another form last week and is busy looking for the paperwork they require, and trying to collect all of the documentation it asks for. She's gotten to the point that she doesn't care if they never give her the back payments they owe her, just please, please, reinstate the monthly payment.

I know of many elderly people who are not getting anywhere near the benefits they're entitled too because it's just too daunting to get through the paperwork to apply.

It is common for illegals, and purveyors of fake ID to go through the cemeteries, to find graves of someone who would now be close to the right age, and then acquire their SSN to use in their fake ID.
