Did you know that Panama has no standing army? Trump if he is serious about claiming the canal could probably take control of it within a week or less. The president of this country probably should be begging Trump to have mercy and begging for a deal.

Taking Panama would violate well over 2 dozen treaties and result in hundreds of billion od dollars worth of sanctions against the US. Our economy hasn't yet fully recovered from the pandemic and the sanctions alone could lead to a recession. Even our closest allies like Japan and the UK would likely place sanctions against of if we actually did it.

Plus if we did try to take control of the canal, we would have to have a military presence both ground and Naval forces there at all times to enforce any real control. This would weaken our ability to respond in other areas of the world and cost hundreds of billions in dollars.
