The "problem" is: God and gods are totally different things. Very short: You can make everything to a god but you are not god. For example, you cannot ask what is outside the universe because there is no outside. You also can't ask what was before the universe because there is no before ‘before’ God created time. We are limited - God isn't.
We can say "I don't know," and that is the best and honest answer. Your premise is the argument I/we always get when someone refers to "God" with a capital or "god" without one.
NO ONE knows how the universe started or why. Not you. Not me. Not science. Not religious people. Not philosophers.
Anyone who says he does is lying.
What you and scores of people before you are doing is making stuff up and asserting you know more than anyone else and because people before you have told you and postulated that the universe was made by what they call "God" who is all knowing and all powerful and loves us and wants a relationship with us mere humans and if we firmly believe like Alice in Wonderland we will have eternal life.
That crap is all made up tripe and passed down to you from humans in authority so long and so often over the centuries that you believe it, like a lie repeated by indoctrinators over and over and over again.
Even is I, as a non-believer, grant the premise that the universe could not have originated on its own, that does not mean you get to insert your conceived and contrived god there. If it did, then anyone can insert their own god concept there, and there have been thousands of them throughout history.
Some people wrote things over centuries over what they thought "God" was, if there was a god. Then people collected those musings and put them in a book. Then they promoted that book as the truth and shamelessly said their god inspired it. Proof be damned.
Fast forward to today, and religion, like politics, is a form of control of the masses while those doing the controlling make lots of money. IOW, invent a problem and then say "I have the cure," and it costs you donations, adulation, respect, and belief.
