It's fun to talk about the different demands of both sides, but all that is very hypothetical and misses the point of the shutdown.

The reality is that Schumer took a political hammering when he did not filibuster a clean CR six months ago. He is determined not to let that happen again.

So, he is waiting for some poor slob Senate Democrats to step up, vote for cloture and face the wrath of Alexandria that Schumer fears so much.


The rest is just stage setting for that ongoing drama. It has probably only just begun.

Needless to say, no (R) will ever want to be seen as caving in to Schumer and the other New York Elite Club members. Republicans don't really care about the shutdown that much. Fedemps don't vote (R), in fact they often use the power of the federal government to attack (R)'s when they are in elected office. Welfare dolees, likewise, are loyal Democrats, as well as federal employee unions who are heavy (D) donors.

They’re hoping they can keep it going for another year and then they win the Senate and then it never goes away by passing continuing legislation then. Screw it, say no and leave the shut down going would be my position if I was a Senator on the right.
