Actually under 8 U.S. Code § 1325 illegal entry is a crime with penalties with up to 6 months in jail (misdeomeanor) and 8 U.S. Code § 1326 is illegal reentry which is a felony with up to 2 years in prison.

When I worked in Silicon Valley in a large manufacturing plant, about 1/4 of the employees were illegal and the same thing would happen when 'immigration' came through. (It wasn't called ICE at that time). A lot of illegal workers would be taken back over the border but in a week or so, they'd be back. A lot of them were making American dollars and sending those dollars back to family in Mexico.

Which is why it is long past time to tax money wires to Mexico at 100%, and tattoo "ILLEGAL ALIEN" on the faces of all illegals deported.

I worked for a company from 2002- 2008. The one where the management was so evil it cured me of being Republican. Anyway, to get around the "not hiring illegals" to do menial work, they hired these contractors through a labor agency. We started out with 2 but eventually had six. they were nice guys, did the work efficiently and they went home.

Then, a bigger company bought this one out (after I left.) and their first dictate was that contractors had to have proof of citizenship. So the Mexicans were gone and the only people they could find was these scary as hell white methheads. Didn't work half as hard. The girls in the office asked for someone to walk them to their cars at the end of the day. When Payday came, they wouldn't show up the next Monday and they got a whole new batch of scary as hell contractors on Tuesday.

The USA doesn't export groceries the way we used to....for a variety of reasons.

But that's no reason to enslave people to make products more affordable.

Cotton was once picked by hand. Now we have machines do it.
Potatoes used to be dug by hand....again now they are simply harvested by a machine. Easy peasy.

Most of your orchard crops (apples, pears, and peaches) can be picked by machines but it's currently too expensive to do so and the cost of removing ripe from green fruit is cost prohibitive. Lettuces are picked by hand. Same with tomatoes and grapes. Raisins are machine picked.

We dont need illegals to harvest food. Because some foods and agricultural products have NOT kept pace with inflation....some have and been priced out of the market. Wool is a great example. You will spend more money hauling sheep wool to the processor than he will pay you for the wool you bring. And that doesn't even cover the cost of feed, shearing, breeding, and vet bills for the sheep.
There are NOT many wool items in a clothing store anymore. They have wool as light as cotton and polyester....but not as cheap.
Wool is simply too labor intensive to be as cheap as the other materials.

I didn't realize that they were undocumented.
Nobody showed up to clean the offices
Then I got word that they were picked up just outside the campus. Happened Friday afternoon.
No word on whether or not they'll be back.
So I unpacked my old janitorial skills from way back and did everything from the floors to the carpets to the toilets in my building. Took out the Trash and the recycling. Don't know what the rest of the campus did.
