Now think about the defenders of the police. They have to shoot because the bad guy MIGHT be armed. They were afraid the bad guy would be armed. They couldn’t take the chance. They had no choice.



I have never taken issue with the cops shooting someone armed. I argue that we can learn and improve with every situation if we examine it for more than covering the cops ass.

Now consider the blind support of cops. How shooting unarmed people is perfectly justified because he MIGHT have a weapon. Now look at the pandemic where precautions were unjustified because we didn’t KNOW what the mortality rate was. When part, a big part, of that lower mortality was because while we ran close to the limits we managed to avoid exceeding the vital care that saved so many lives.

There are millions of interactions between Black people and police annually, including about 2 million arrests.

In 2019, 1,004 people, mostly white, were shot dead by the police, according to the Washington Post. Assuming that an average of one police officer is involved per killing, then 1,004 police officers, or fourteen-hundredths of 1% of America’s 700,000 police officers, were involved in fatal police shootings. Obviously, the typical police officer will never kill anyone in his career.

A Washington Post shows that 14 Black and 25 white “unarmed” Americans were shot dead by police in 2019. An analysis that was broadcast on "Tucker Carlson Tonight" of 10 of the “unarmed” Black decedents showed that for five of these persons, calling them unarmed is misleading: two had cars, one had a stun gun, and two others had guns, authorities said. In those two cases where the decedents had guns, which were the only cases where the weapons were not used to assault police, the officers faced homicide charges.

Even if the remaining deaths were criminal, they do not add up to a narrative of numerous police officers indiscriminately murdering unarmed Black men. Neither do all Black detainees die unless they resist arrest. Indeed, the odds of any unarmed person being shot dead by police are less than their odds of being struck by lightning.

Not sure you are actually, honestly, looking for a response from me but I'll go ahead.

I don't solely blame anyone for the subprime crisis in 2008. There's plenty of blame to go around but I place the most blame on private industry. Although the subprime crisis may have been able to have been prevented by government action, the ultimate cause was decisions made by private individuals. The CRA had basically nothing to do with it. The institutions pumping out subprime loans were not bound by it's provisions and the loans going out were not made reluctantly. Mortgages were not being made by traditional local banks looking for safe investments, the types of institutions the CRA applied to. They were made by mortgage origination firms who's job was merely to make the deal and pass it on.

Second, I'm not going to argue that failure to regulate CDS was a good thing. But the failure to regulate CDS is owed to multiple people, not just Clinton. The language was argued over at length, including by Republicans who supported this change as well. However, if the ultimate argument here is that we need more regulation in the financial sector, I have no problem accepting that argument. However, it is not really the same argument being made by Republicans, now is it?

Third, GSEs were not the cause of the subprime crisis. These institutions were not enacting the types of loans that provided the toxic core of the crisis. They were hemorrhaging market share in loans as the private mortgage brokers rose in prominence. The bad loans did not come from GSEs, they came from private industry.

At the end of the day, the vast majority of the problem in the subprime crisis came from people (lots of MBAs to be sure) making loans, collecting fees, and passing the risk off to private investors who did not take the time or effort to determine what they were buying. It was bad decisions with bad incentives spread throughout private sector.
