Better late than never I suppose. Sure, there are other things they coulda been doing like raising the minimum wage, granting civil rights and legal equality to the LGBT community, but being a Star Trak geek this was good to see as well.

"On December 4, the House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space and Technology of the U.S. Congress held a session discussing the possibility of extraterrestrial life and what should be done to find space aliens. Titled: Astrobiology: The Search for Biosignatures in Our Solar System and Beyond” the session lasted 90 minutes."

Ordinarily, I'd post the link to what I pasted but can't just yet being new. But you can google "congressional hearing space aliens" and get to it too.
 
Its not an unfounded reason for a hearing, albeit there are more pressing issues on the table. But life elsewhere in the universe is a statistical certainty.
