It may be true, but it depends what you mean by "left". There were some leftist groups in the US in the 60s and 70s, Communists/Marxists/Maoists and whatnot. There may still be some groups with very few members.

But if you mean among Democrats, that's nonsense, although I suppose there might have been exceptions.

And in other countries it was bigger, the Communist Party was really big in France, and you can check out Jeremy Corbyn's biography (Labour Party, UK). And former communists in former communist countries are not a rare thing in modern leftist parties.
