It does not say who attacked it but if China challenged the U.S navy and learned that the blockade is real, they may have just learned how serious America is.

President Xi has been running a declining economy and they are trying to ramp up the "CCP is best!" campaign.

This will not inspire their citizens.

A Chinese-owned oil tanker came under attack near the Strait of Hormuz for the first time since the U.S.-Iran conflict began on Thursday.
A report from Chinese media stated that the unnamed vessel was marked "CHINA OWNER & CREW." The ship's deck caught fire from the attack and it remains unclear whether any of its crew were injured.

This was the first time a Chinese oil tanker has been attacked, a person with knowledge of the matter told Chinese outlet Caixin.
China remains a key buyer of Iranian oil, which has been targeted by a US blockade in the Gulf of Oman.

Who fired on the tanker?

You think firing on a Chinese flagged oil tanker that had Iran's permission to go through the Strait is smart?
Was it smart to attack the Japanese in the Pacific?

This is war. China is funding Irans radical theology as it is Russis war and they are acting sly in the background, smiling as the barbarians kill one another.

They know there is a blockade and they know Iran must not have nukes.

So, smart is not the term, it is necessary and China has had fair warning. Isn't the more appropriate question, "was it smart for China to challenge the U.S blockade? Especially since the world knows how much you have armed their oppressive government that kills their own citizens"

The ship was not running the blockade and I believe was a anchor and not coming from Iran.
