Mercantilism does qualify as a zero-sum game especially when contrasted with "modern economics" which generally sees trade as positive-sum where both parties can benefit through comparative advantage.
Agreed.
"They" meaning Chinese communists did not put guns to the heads of rich American capitalists and force them to export their factories to China; good old fashioned capitalist greed made that decision 30 years ago,
Agreed. But more like 5o years ago. THis started back in the 70s and 80s. Really got baked into policy under Reagan. And has not been... even talked about seriously since then.
and now it's whining about the economic success China has achieved by lifting hundreds of millions of Chinese from poverty while millions of Americans have dropped from the middle class into a gig economy.
Mmm, I have to disagree here, "IT", ie the American Business elite, is still just fine with the status quo. THey have adjusted to the situation and have done fine with it, outsourcing manufacturing while taking a cut of the flow of money leaving the country.
I agree that China has done a good job by it's people, in raising their quality of life for their citizens.
That is to their credit. The RED CHINESE, are the government of china and as thus has a responsiblity to their people and to some extent, they have fulfilled that, in routing that flow of wealth to their population.
To be clear, that is nearly the ONLY thing to their credit, as they are terrible people and very oppressive.
AND, I also agree with you that part of the price of that, was dropping a large portion of the us labor force "into the gig economy".
I want to stop that flow of wealth from leaving the country. I want higher wages for the American workers.
