Can the federal government force gun registration? How about state voter information registration?

State officials are refusing to disclose data the commission wants, sometimes pointing to their own laws.

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump’s commission on election integrity is facing significant hurdles, as multiple state election officials have said they will not comply with the panel’s request this week for specific, sensitive voter information.

Even some Republican officials have said that they may be opposed to or prohibited from releasing such information or that they’re otherwise willing to do only the bare minimum in satisfying the Trump commission’s demands.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R), the commission’s vice chair who signed the letter sent to the states on Wednesday, told the Kansas City Star that his state would not release the last four digits of voters’ Social Security numbers because that information is not publicly available.

The requested information includes the “full first and last names of all registrants, middle names or initials if available, addresses, dates of birth, political party (if recorded in your state), last four digits of social security number if available, voter history (elections voted in) from 2006 onward, active/inactive status, cancelled status, information regarding any felony convictions, information regarding voter registration in another state, information regarding military status, and overseas citizen information.”

Critics are fearful that sensitive private data could become public if given to the commission and that investigators will use that information to create an inaccurate picture of voter fraud ― a relatively rare phenomenon in the U.S.

Does anyone believe Trump is asking for this information for honorable reasons? Anyone who is against a federal gun registry should also be against a federal voter registry of personal information. I thought Trump and his base were all about "smaller" government. Should the federal government be allowed to force states to provide this information? Just imagine if President Obama had requested such information.

Federal gun registration? Federal voter registration? What's the diff?

Gun Registration goes against the 14th Amendment....according to the Haynes v. United States Supreme Court ruling, criminals do not have to register their illegal guns...that would mean only law abiding people would be legally required to register their guns........I know you don't see the problem with this, but normal people do....

And no one is going to use voter information to take away the Right to vote.....we have example after example of governments registering guns and then banning and confiscating them......Germany, Britain, Australia......and various makes and models of guns have been registered, then banned in California and New York....

Have a laugh. See what Haynes really says:

Haynes v. United States - Wikipedia

Dipshit...I already have...

Haynes v. United States - Wikipedia

In a 7-1 decision, the Court ruled in 1968 in favor of Haynes. Earl Warren dissented in a one sentence opinion and Thurgood Marshall did not participate in the ruling.

As with many other 5th amendment cases, felons and others prohibited from possessing firearms could not be compelled to incriminate themselves through registration.[1][2] The National Firearms Act was amended after Haynes to make it apply only to those who could lawfully possess a firearm. This eliminated prosecution of prohibited persons, such as criminals, and cured the self-incrimination problem.

In this new form, the new registration provision was upheld. The court held: " To eliminate the defects revealed by Haynes, Congress amended the Act so that only a possessor who lawfully makes, manufactures, or imports firearms can and must register them", United States v. Freed, 401 U.S. 601 (1971).[3] The original Haynes decision continues to block state prosecutions of criminals who fail to register guns as required by various state law gun registration schemes.

Dumb shit......

How quickly the hypocrisy is exposed for gun lickers. Don't DARE register our guns, that's communism. Registering voters, oh no big deal that's the type of communism conservatives love. Control and suppression of opposition voting is one of the wet dreams of Republicans.

They want to make sure that convicted bank robbers can't vote, but they don't mind if they can purchase firearms.

And you lie.....we don't want felons to have guns and unlike you assipes who keep putting them back on the streets after they have been arrested...over and over again....we want felons caught with guns and those who use guns to commit crimes to go to jail for 30 years...not under 2 years.....

It is you morons who fight to put criminals back on the streets, including violent gun offenders...

Once again voter registration is done at the state level not the federal level

and the state already has a record of every gun I buy so and since the person I bought the gun from must have a federal firearms license the federal government has access to all those records as well

We cannot do that by lowering taxes. We need, real times of war on crime, tax rates.

But one of the enforcement mechanisms of that law is the background check which is widely opposed among so-called gun rights advocates, including the NRA.

There are private sales loopholes in the background check laws that Republicans will not allow to be closed.

Those are state issues not federal issues

it is already illegal in most states to knowingly sell a gun to a felon via a private sale and many require all private sales to be facilitated by a federally licensed firearm dealer

No...moron, they helped pass the current mandatory federal background check system.

They oppose universal background checks because it would impose mandatory gun registration. Current mandatory federal background checks do not stop criminals or mass shooters because they steal their guns or use straw buyers....the mass shooters simply pass any and all background checks to get their guns......

So universal background checks would be gotten around the same way current federally mandated background checks are gotten around....

There is no loophole. Guns are private property and there is no law regarding the sale of private property. And dipshit.....you know because you have been told over and over, that background checks for private sales would be gotten around the same way current federally mandated background checks are gotten around....

you anti gunners want background checks for private sales to harrass gun owners with extra more fees and wasted time....and because they require universal gun registration....gun registration that does not apply to actual criminals because they do not have to incriminate themselves as found in Haynes v. United States.....making registration stupid and pointless...

As was pointed out .....felons know they can't buy guns...no matter from a gun show or a private seller....so they can already be arrested if they are caught with a gun......that is all the law we need to lock them up.....
