Now the above article is about something similar in the Canary Islands, which has a direct path to the US Coast, and there is no threat from there.

Just because it is a "show about volcanos" does not mean it is real or accurate. I see a hell of a lot of junk science floating out there, and any claim like that should be discarded.

how would i know if it didnt sound right?...these guys were talking about Yellowstone and were showing other volcanoes that if erupting will cause a lot of damage and they mentioned the one in the Atlantic ...and like i said they had Phd's in Geology...

They obviously don't know shit about geography if they thought an island off the southeastern coast of Africa could threaten the US east coast with a tsunami. You literally can't get there from there. It is almost as bad as being in the Indian Ocean.

Before I even looked past that, simply seeing the geography told me that was a load of crap. I needed to know nothing about a fictional supervolcano or anything else, simply the geographical placement of that island told me the claim was bogus.

There is no supervolcano in the Atlantic. And in reality, the threat from them is not from the eruption itself. Nor is it the tsunami. By far the largest threat is the ash such an eruptions creates.

Now Krakatoa did indeed create a tsunami when it erupted in 1883 and that did devastate the local islands. But here is the thing, by the time it reached East Africa, it was little more than the same as a storm surge. And that is far shorter than the distance from the island you claimed is to North America. Not even counting the fact that there is a significant chunk of Africa above that island which would block any tsunami heading in that direction and any tsunami would be heading to South America.

No, unless you are right on top of a supervolcano by far the largest thing to worry about is the ash cloud. There is DNA evidence that the Toba eruption roughly 74 kya almost wiped out humans because of the ash cloud and possibly decade long "Volcanic Winter". And 10 mya when the Yellowstone Hotspot was still around Twin Falls it spit out enough ash that over 1,000 miles away in Nebraska it dumped up to 10 feet of ash. And ashfalls from that hot spot have been uncovered all across the continent from New York to California.
