I don't excuse the shameful way that Trump's enemies have distorted and demagogued his theatrical tough talk about dealing with unruly protesters, but Trump needs to stop giving his enemies this kind of ammo. He needs to stop making it possible for his enemies to make it seem like he is still excusing violence against protesters.
For example, yesterday Trump noted that the guy who got elbowed as he was being led out that rally in NC had been making obscene gestures and using provocative language. True, but that was no reason for anyone to elbow him in the face as he was being led away, and, predictably enough, some news networks used Trump's remark to argue that Trump was equivocating about not wanting violence at his rallies.
Trump's enemies do not care how rudely or provocatively the protesters are behaving at his rallies. They will use any action against those protesters to paint Trump's rallies as violently oppressive and authoritarian.
Trump needs to realize this fact and (1) continue to tell his supporters not to get physical with protesters, as he has been doing for the last several days; (2) let the security people take care of the protesters; and (3) continue to make it clear in his interviews and press conferences that he condemns any violence against protesters, no matter how rudely and provocatively they behave.
