1. Resale value is going to tank over battery replacement cost, lithium ion batteries are good for 500ish charge discharge cycles after which they begin to lose capacity and efficiency bigly. In some cases the replacement cost will exceed the residual value of the vehicle. I predict this time bomb goes off in about 4-5 years from now.

2. Sourcing of the minerals to produce the batteries. The "rare earths" required are predominately sourced with unethical labor and may not exist in the quantities needed to sustain global EV production.

That is to say nothing of many other problems, such as additional strain on the power system. BTW those who live in cold areas will see greatly reduced range during the winter. In an incident like the TX power shutdown early this year, how are you going to fuel your vehicle and go anywhere? Better have a couple PowerWalls or a big ass battery farm. Home electrical systems are not designed to handle EV charging, by the way.

The cost is another, EVs are a luxury item. EVs can't economically compare to gasoline. Even with tax credits they still lose. Full battery EVs and plug in hybrids, no dice. Most of the people who drive them can afford to drive them 2-3 years and sell them and get new ones, like they do with everything else. The rest of us mere mortals cannot afford to do that, we buy and keep a vehicle for a minimum of a decade and over 150k miles generally.

The "battery breakthrough" has been on the horizon for decades. Could it happen? Yeah. However, don't bet the farm on it happening though.
