He simply waited till Trump was out of office and covid and recession had placed the west in a weaker than before position.

Possibly, had nato been unified and willing to confront the Russians, as they were prior to 9-11 and W's misadventures, and before Obama who was by nature more willing to "rethink" US policy, Nato would have simply said it was guaranteeing Ukraine's unalligned status and placed several "no longer existing" armored and infantry battalions along Poland's border.

Hard to say, without Western interference things likely would have been different. Just speculation now.
