The movie is based on a real life couple, Charles Starkweather and Carol Fugate. In the movie the Spacek character ends up with probation but in real life Fugate gets 17 years and Starkweather is executed. The interesting part is Sheen trying to be James Dean and he almost pulls it off.

Hollywood decided that Starkweather would be portrayed as pretending to be James Dean and they decided that Martin Sheen would portray Starkweather pretending to be Dean. Did it work?
