I spent some time in Spain in 1971 and I can tell you that the "Common" person was scared out of their wits. The Gendarmes could do anything to the common man including kill them with zero reason. Yes I was there in 64 ,67 73 and for a year and a half in 1994- my very interesting Aunt Margot had the bar Casa Blanca in Fuengirola And was partners with Lou Hoad On a tennis club in Mijas. I was stopped twice driving in 1969 and as soon as you do something, there's a couple of guys with submachine guns to take your money. Fascism is absolutely horrible and Franco is just as bad as Mussolini worse... yes the Socialists lost the Civil War in 1939. Mainly to Hitler and Mussolini. And of course the communists and anarchists are always a problem...

Sorry, but this argument that Republicans somehow gave us Hitler, Japanese militarists and WWII — since they supposedly single-handedly gave us the Great Depression — strikes me as a ridiculous hyper-partisan misreading of history.

Numerous failures of Democrats like Woodrow Wilson (e.g. after WWI) and the example of Deep South segregation (then entirely dominated by Democrats) can “equally” be blamed for “setting bad examples” and encouraging racialized imperialism and fascism in Japan and Germany.
