I haven't lost any appendages, but my breast bone was split 28 years ago for open heart surgery. If they put you out for the surgery, you won't feel a thing. If they put you in twilight, I would guess they will use a local anesthetic as well and you probably won't feel anything then either. Using my heart surgery and the subsequent recovery as my guide, I doubt you'll feel any pain. I never experienced so much as an itch from my surgery. Good luck, don't stress. All will be fine.
