My parents are both in their high 90s and I'm not too far behind them being the oldest son. During my most recent visit, I try to do it two or three times a week.... The extremely rare subject of politics did come up. I was quite surprised. I'm going to tell you that my parents are very religious and extremely anti-abortion. I'm going to tell you that they are diametrically opposed to alternate lifestyles and rather judgmental when it comes to people that are on government handouts.... You would think that they would be Republicans but they're not.

This is a no-brainer. The reason your parents are not voting as you expected is because political philosophy was once something you could rely upon and an older generation has not understood that those rules no longer apply. I have voted Socialist-Democracy for decades and I consider myself Socialist-Democracy. But the CIA assassinated our PM and now the Socialist-Democrat Party no longer represents my values although the party hasn't changed its name. I now vote to the right.
