A discussion about rifles and capabilities

Re: Dallas shooting
I’m seeing claims that the stripper clip is 8mm Mauser.
Another thinks 7.62x54r
The dispute has something to do with rimmed vs non rimmed.
Me, I am not familiar with either.

My old Nagant was my first thought.

I was thinking someone would be knowledgeable enough to identify the rifle. I’m seeing K98 a lot on Twitter
Yes, it's K98 family. Could be Turkish, or Yugo M48, or Czech VZ24. They are all K98 actions, and all look the same.

I'm leaning towards a .55cal British anti tank rifle.

(After comparing images of the rounds found)

But there isn't much there for scale.

Not even close. The Boyes is huge compared to that K98. It's slightly over 5 feet long, and weighs 35 pounds empty.
LOL, I knew I needed something more in the way of scaling.

Both 8mm Mauser and 7.62x54 Russian are brawler rounds

Being partial to the commie round, I'd say one lost the war and the other won it.

But then I'd be wrong. :laughing0301:

AI Overview

The 8mm Mauser generally offers better ballistics due to its larger diameter, heavier projectiles, and higher muzzle energy compared to the 7.62x54R, though this comes with increased weight and recoil. However, the best choice depends on the specific loads and rifle platform, as both are effective, full-power military cartridges with comparable effective ranges.

8mm Mauser Ballistics:
  • Larger caliber:
The 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm) has a bullet diameter of approximately 0.324 inches.
  • Higher Energy:
It develops more muzzle energy, making it powerful and effective for hunting.

  • Heavier Projectiles:
The larger diameter allows for heavier projectiles, which retain their energy better at medium ranges.
7.62x54R Ballistics:
  • Smaller caliber: The 7.62x54R has a bullet diameter of about 0.312 inches.
  • Lighter Projectiles: While capable with modern loads, it typically fires lighter projectiles at high velocities.

  • Lower Energy: It generally produces less muzzle energy than the 8mm Mauser.
Key Considerations:
  • Muzzle Energy:
The 8mm Mauser consistently develops more muzzle energy than the 7.62x54R.
  • Muzzle Velocity:
While the 7.62x54R has a high muzzle velocity for its time, the 8mm Mauser's greater projectile mass can result in similar or higher performance with modern, higher-performing bullets.

  • Modern Ammunition:
The ballistics of both cartridges are significantly affected by modern bullet selection, with high Ballistic Coefficient (BC) bullets making a substantial difference.

  • Platform Impact:
The type of rifle chambered in each cartridge, such as a Mauser or a Mosin-Nagant, has a greater impact on performance than the subtle differences in the cartridges themselves.
