We were told this would not happen again....New Zealand banned guns after the rare mass public shooting they had a few years ago....and it happened again....

The only thing keeping this from being an actual mass oublic shooting?

The guy failed to kill 3 people......he had a gun....which we are rold cant happen in New Zealand....

So how good is gun control on this big island?

He was a known criminal.

He was a prohibited individual.

He was a known mentally ill individual.

He had a history of family violence

He did not have a license for the gun.

That is how good gun control works in New Zealand....

New Zealand is in mourning after a shooting in Auckland left two people dead, hours before the city opened the Fifa Women's World Cup.
Six other people, including police officers, were injured and the gunman is also dead after the incident at 07:22 (19:22 GMT) on a construction site in the central business district.
-------
The man was known to police and had a history of family violence and mental health issues. He had been subject to a home detention order but had an exemption to work at the site. He did not have a license to own a firearm.

So they have 1 mass shooting every few years.

We have hundreds a year. (And no, now that you've lowered the bar to two dead instead of your usually five dead, we can now claim hundreds of mass shootings.

We dont have hundreds a year you lying asshole....and they had one.....before they banned guns and now they have had another......after they banned them...you doofus

The obama number is 3 killed and as I stated this wasnt a mass public shooting because only 2 were killed....

The US has a gazillion more people than NZ. Also, drugs run rampant thanks to a government that won't secure the border, which ramps up gun violence.

It's apples and oranges.

No, it's impossible to predict that it wouldn't happen again. It just became much less likely that it would happen as frequently as in the US.

No again! See my first comment above.

What is NZ's murder rate compared to ours? How many shootings per year in both countries?

Doesn't matter.....95% of our gun murders are criminals murdering other criminals, and the Centers for Disease Control research shows Americans use their legal guns 1.1 million times a year to stop rapes, robberies, murders, beatings, stabbings and even mass public shootings..........1.1 million times a year......lives saved.......

And the majority of the individuals doing 95% of the shooting and murder are criminals released by the democrat party judges, politicians and prosecutors.....

But that's the point... they banned them three years ago, and this is the first time one has slipped through.

We've had HUNDREDS of "Mass shootings" where at least two people died.

How convenient. The Dems / Socialists rely on inventing new terms for mass shootings as a way to further their gun grabbing fantasies.

No, dipshit......they had guns and hadnt had a mass shooting since the 1990s......so guns werent a problem when they had them and now that they banned them the ban didnt stop this known, mentally ill, violent crimjnal from getting a gun...and violent crime in New Zeakand is up 53% since they made innocent civilians helpless...

They gave up their guns for no reason and now more people are victims of violent crime, not less

Gun laws do not stop mass shootings.

Just look at CA ,arguably the strictest gun laws in the country yet they also have the most mass shootings in fact CA has twice as many mass shootings as the state in second place.

Thise are gang shootings where gang members are shooting each other with guns they already cant legally buy, own or carry...

meanwhile normal people use their legal guns 1.1 million times a year to stop rapes, robberies, murders, car jackings, beatings and stabbings as well as mass public shootings.....according to the CDC

New Zealand has a homicide rate of 0.7 per 100,000, compared to the US, which has a rate of 5.6 per 100,000.

I think they are getting this right.

It has nothing to do with gun laws.

The murder rate in the US is about what it was in 1950 despite there being literally tens ot thousands of state and federal gun laws being passed in the last 60 years.

The murder rate in the UK is about what it was in 1950 despite their draconian gun laws and outright gun bans passed in the last 60 years.

If gun laws lowered the murder rate then the UK should have a LOWER murder rate now than they did BEFORE all hose gun laws you love were passed. They don't.

Authoritarian politicians making decisions for their controllable minions is the goal of the Dems / Socialists.

And they had that before they banned guns, and after banning their guns their violent crime rate has only increased........you have no point....

In fact, according to the country’s latest crime statistics, things seem to be getting worse.
Rates of injury and death caused by firearms are tracking higher than ever before.

It shows a growing willingness of people to use their guns against other people.
The problem is particularly big in Auckland.
Over the past 12 months, police have attended 4 percent more jobs where guns are involved than the previous 12 months, and there was a 74 percent increase in injuries.

If you compare the past 12 months to a decade earlier, there was a 53 percent increase in gun crime, and a 327 percent increase in injuries caused by guns.

Auckland City councillor Alf Filipaina said he was not surprised by the figures; they backed up the feeling of the community.

He said the rise in gun crime has coincided with Australia’s policy of deporting 501s to New Zealand, and the rise of new gangs such as the Comancheros.
In the past year, growing tensions between the Killer Beez and the Tribesmen have also seen a large number of shootings.

And you have to explain these facts....

Over 27 years, from 1993 to the year 2015, we went from 200 million guns in private hands in the 1990s and 4.7 million people carrying guns for self defense in 1997...to close to 400-600 million guns in private hands and over 19.4 million people carrying guns for self defense in 2019 (in 2020 that number is 21.52 million)...guess what happened...

New Concealed Carry Report For 2020: 19.48 Million Permit Holders, 820,000 More Than Last Year despite many states shutting down issuing permits because of the Coronavirus - Crime Prevention Research Center

Gun Homicide Rate Down 49% Since 1993 Peak; Public Unaware

Compared with 1993, the peak of U.S. gun homicides, the firearm homicide rate was 49% lower in 2010, and there were fewer deaths, even though the nation’s population grew. The victimization rate for other violent crimes with a firearm—assaults, robberies and sex crimes—was 75% lower in 2011 than in 1993. Violent non-fatal crime victimization overall (with or without a firearm) also is down markedly (72%) over two decades.
======

The gun murder and gun suicide rates in the U.S. both remain below their peak levels. There were 6.2 gun murders per 100,000 people in 2020, below the rate of 7.2 recorded in 1974.

======

Over the past few decades, the number of guns in America has increased massively, so much so that there are now more guns than people in the United States. Yet federal crime statistics show that firearm homicides dropped about 40 percent between 1993 and 2018, from 7 per 100,000 people to 4.3 per 100,000 people (for nonfatal crimes involving guns, the decline was 71 percent).

Violent crime, including homicides, did spike during the pandemic, and while the most recent data is incomplete, it's clear that gun-related violence remains far below where it was 30 years ago despite more guns than ever being out there.

The man did the deed with a pump action shotgun. He had to put a lot of effort into this, in the US he might have used a semi-automatic AR-15 with a big clip and really gotten a body count. That's how the US rolls.
